In the middle of the 19th century, Edgar Allan Poe wrote his essay “The Philosophy of Composition”, in which he analysed the composition of his own poem "The Raven"; it filled many people with fantasies of creating poetic works of their own. Poe showed that what appear to be wild uses of imagery are actually often the deployment of specific strategies, with mathematical precision. Electronic music duo The KLF took a similar approach to music with their 1988 book “The Manual”, which came out in Czech translation a few years ago.

When you were a teenager, perhaps you had a clear categorisation of music: "I don’t listen to commercial stuff.” Commercial equals mainstream. It’s whatever’s popular, and it’s just made for money. In the 1970s, which could be considered the golden era of disco, much of the music by Germany’s Kraftwerk's sounded like it came from a different planet. Despite this - or maybe even because of it – Kraftwerk’s Autobahn was an enormous success, even in the commercial music charts. Many music critics mark Autobahn as a turning point in the history of electronic music. What other songs from the past can be considered equally essential?
In the decades since the emergence of popular genres of electronic music, many documentaries have been made about the phenomena, as well as a number of feature films inspired by the music and the events around it. Now that the rainy autumn days are getting closer, it’s that time of year when, instead of being outside in the fresh air, you’ll probably be spending more time regenerating in the warmth of your home. You know how it is: it's Friday night, and your friends are inviting you to go out clubbing. First, you remember what you did last weekend, so you consider having a quiet evening at home in front of the TV this time. But in the end, you decide your quiet night in will happen another time. Maybe before you go out, you’ll say that this time you’re definitely just going out for a few hours, and you‘ll be home in bed soon. You‘re not totally certain you’ll keep that resolution, though. How well do you know yourself?
Remember tapes and CDs? Once upon a time, it seemed like these formats had completely overthrown the many-decades-long dominance of vinyl records.
